01 · Problem
Deep work needs uninterrupted focus, but most timer apps work against it: to check how much time is left, you unlock your phone, open the app, and end up distracted by notifications and other apps. The timer meant to protect your focus becomes another way to break it.
02 · My role
I designed and built Derin, from concept to App Store release: product design, the iOS app, Live Activities and Dynamic Island integration, and the launch itself.
03 · Key decisions
- A
Live Activities
The timer lives on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, so users can glance at their progress without unlocking the phone or opening the app.
- B
System-rendered countdown
Instead of pushing updates every second, the Live Activity uses a date-based timer that iOS renders natively. The countdown stays accurate while the app is in the background.
- C
Distraction-free by design
A deliberately minimal interface with no feeds or clutter: start a session in one tap and get out of the way. The app's job is to disappear while you work.
